Last Kiwi stop – Auckland

November 30, 2011 Leave a comment

We planned in a day in Auckland, mainly to go up the sky tower and get a view from the highest point in the southern atmosphere. After a pretty miserable morning trying to wrestle with Indian Visa applications online, we catch a bus ride into town.

Santiago – Goodbye South America

The last 5 weeks have been amazing, in many ways much easier and more accessible than we expected. The hostals and the buses being the real revelations.

Rosario – More than just the birth place of Che Guevara

October 10, 2011 Leave a comment

Sitting on the long distance bus, for mile after mind numbing mile of pampa flatness, a sense of nirvana washes over as I reflect on the last few days. Rosario, our recent home, hardly registers in the guide books apart from its possible mention as the birth place of Che Guevara, the place where the Argentine flag was invented and host to one of the longest bridges in the world.

The cable car for the winter ski season takes you up past the ski jumps, where we watch someone completely mad do a jump on the dry ski slope and anyone who has fallen on a dry ski slope knows how much it hurts if you get it wrong.

Kozakov – the hunt for stones and views

July 15, 2011 Leave a comment

Inspired by our garnet collecting, we had heard that Kozakov Hill was the place for semi-precious stones. A trip was planned that took in the streams where semi-precious stones can be found, together with a hike to the tallest lookout tower in the area. This linked in with a return leg to the bikes (that had been dropped off in another valley) before a return to the van.
