Bus to the top of the world

The bus from Mendoza to Santiago is a must. It only needs to be done once, but it is pretty special.

The day started badly, because as well as the banging headache and parched throat, the Mendoza bus station had a wildcat strike and all busses were empounded. As I went around the bus kiosks, they told me that the Santiago bus was going to travel, but we needed to go and wait on a square in town, and that the bus would arrive there well away from the blockades and the protestors.

Salta the Gorgeous

Following the overnight bus, the few days in Salta are a bit of down time before we head north to the Bolivian border and high altitude deserts. As a place, Salta is by far the most beautiful and relaxed so far. As a consequence, it is also the most touristy, occupying an important trade crossroads between Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. The area is one of the most traditional and indigenous in Argentina, and for the most part, it feels one of the safest areas that we have been to.

The Wonderful Iguazu Falls

For us, Iguazu exceeds all expectations and defies superlatives. These truly massive falls on the Argentine and Brazilian border are absolutely sensational. With over 3 million litres of water per second, these falls go on and on. The day after we visit, we hear that the Swiss delegation are here to see if Iguazu will be one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Crossing the Equator – Buenos Aires

After surviving a thirteen and a half hour flight with 3 young children to what felt like the other side of the world, I don’t know what we were expecting – people with two heads maybe. So we were a bit “oh” that everything was pretty normal.

Vranov – Mala Skala (Little Rock)

The largest rock castle in the Czech Republic, this 15th century castle is perched high up on a sandstone outcrop with a virtually un-impregnable battlement. The numerous  memorials to children who have fallen off the sides of the castle somewhat focuses the mind, and Theo was well and truly contained in a backpack or on a dog lead.
