Ninh Binh – like a ring donut.

To continue our journey, we took what appeared to be the only option of a transfer via Haiphong to Ninh Binh. The bus, boat, bus and another bus combination took 7 hours and I am still convinced all the travel companies lied to us and ripped us off, but I am just about getting over it. The last bus certainly made for a memorable trip on public transport, with all the bags thrown on the roof and an interior designed for the residents of Lilliput.

Oh so pretty – Hoi An

Hoi An is so pretty on the eye and easy on the tourist that it may not pose enough of a challenge for some. That said, with one of the highest densities of tailors anywhere in the world, shopping is a luxurious pleasure.

Kanchanaburi & Hellfire Pass

For today we thought we would embark on something a bit more hardcore. Kanchanaburi is the home of the bridge over the river Kwai – first detail, it was not built on the Kwai at all. Luckily for Hollywood, the Thai’s did not want to spoil a good tourist opportunity, so they renamed the original river with the new bridge to “Kwae”, so now the film and reality can match.

Bangkok – Days 2 & 3

Over the next few days we tried to see as much of Bangkok as we could, limited only by our reserves of energy in the sapping heat and our slightly flagging interest in Wat’s. On some kind of pretence that it would be healthy, my first stop, a self-indulgent Thai massage on the pier next to Wat Pho, the famous massage school.
