Jaisalmer – the Golden City

The first thing we noticed about Jaisalmer – it has great internet. Being near Pakistan and crawling with army bases and solders, communication is top priority and you can get high speed 3G even in the middle of the desert!

Jodhpur – just a quick stop

We spent most of our time in Jodhpur in our little village, but when we did visit the city the fort was typically brilliant. The combination of gargantuan scale and artistic delicacy make a wonderful awe inspiring combination. Just a few pics on this blog.

Kumbalgarh – a step back in time

The road to Kumbalgarh, is the road to medieval times. Off the beaten track, the villages in these mountains are isolated, even today, many without electricity, certainly without running water.

Chittorgarh – immolation central

The fort of Chittorgarh is of gargantuan proportions, matched only by the scale of the misery that it has been witness to. In the 13th and 16th centuries, tens of thousands of women and children threw themselves onto burning pyres to avoid being taken hostage by invading forces, whilst the men rode out to be slaughtered in battle.

Agra – Prelude to the Taj or India’s biggest secret.

The four hour journey from Delhi to Agra passed quick enough, with the main highlight in the flat part of the country, being the convoys of combine harvesters. We asked Sukhdeep about them, apparently they trundle 600km from the north to cut the fields in the central areas for 2 months and then return, doing the ten day journey 3 times a year. We could not believe it made sense to drive these beasts 600km 6 times a year.

New Delhi – Extreme and Bazaar.

Crash Bang Wallop. We certainly came back down to earth with a bang! Arriving at New Delhi station at 8.30am and straight into the thick of taxi and hawker hell. We had our hotel address ready, and we had looked on Google to check where we were staying. Turns out that the map was wrong and no taxi driver was prepared to take us to the address we had.
