Clump Point Arachnid Adventure

As part of our “explore Mission Beach without a car” campaign, we headed down the footpath aiming for the jetty on the far side of clump point. Being right next to the place we were staying, we were not expecting much drama – and we were not expecting to see the venomous spiders the size of your fist.

Mission Beach

First thing we learnt is that Greyhound busses are pretty grubby and ram packed with sweaty, young, occasionally self-centred backpackers. Second thing we learnt is that Mission Beach bus stop is not in Mission Beach!

Oakura and the black sand beach

On our way through, we stopped for the night on the black sands beach of Oakura, again on the recommendation of Paul on his brilliant road trip itinerary. Whilst the weather was not great, the black sand was still really warm, so as the rest sheltered from wind, I tramped up the beach to see the slowly decaying hull of HMS Garlock, managing to get out on the low tide to see the original boilers before scuttling across the crab infested boulders to the safety of the beach.

Deep Blue

Seaton in Devon

The last 6 days were hell. Some days from 4am until midnight, we NEVER realised how much was involved in getting ready to travel whilst getting the house in some order. The poor van had it tough, in the end the packing just failed us and we added tons of non-essentials, to the point where the van was on the stops and the tyres were grinding on the wheelarches around the corners. (on arrival, we realised that the edges of the tyres are now sliced into the rubber.)
