Bijaipur and our castle retreat

What better way to look down on people, than from the top of a castle. What a contrast – last night £2.50 for a room, tonight luxury in a 16th century castle. To make it even better, they upgraded us to the penthouse suite in the original part of the castle, complete with domed bedrooms, ramparts, balconies and oriel windows.

Prague Now and Then

We headed back to Prague to get a change of scene, there are only so many times one can wonder at woods and rocks before asking oneself, what else is out there? We explored a few previously untried routes (including a great “green” route from the flat, through various tree lined avenues, past the 14th century castle walls, via a cool play ground and back up the old castle of Vysehrad) and without overdoing the culture we got into the groove.

Another castle, another opportunity for an epic bike ride in searing heat. This time to the famous twin castle of trosky. Built on top of two volcanic towers that forced their way up through the soft chalk before the chalk wore away, these symbols of the Bohemian Paradise are worth a visit.

Vranov – Mala Skala (Little Rock)

The largest rock castle in the Czech Republic, this 15th century castle is perched high up on a sandstone outcrop with a virtually un-impregnable battlement. The numerous  memorials to children who have fallen off the sides of the castle somewhat focuses the mind, and Theo was well and truly contained in a backpack or on a dog lead.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Not quite the yellow brick road, but the “Golden Path of Cesky Raj”. With more inclement weather on the way, we decide to leave the bikes at home and set out for a walk over the top of the hills. Our steep climb was rewarded with some memorable treats, firstly the sculpture garden, then the little corroded coin (washed out by recent rains, could it be Roman?) and the icing on the cake, the lookout tower.
