Last Kiwi stop – Auckland

November 30, 2011 Leave a comment

We planned in a day in Auckland, mainly to go up the sky tower and get a view from the highest point in the southern atmosphere. After a pretty miserable morning trying to wrestle with Indian Visa applications online, we catch a bus ride into town.

Waitomo glow worms light up our day

November 29, 2011 Leave a comment

Do we, don’t we…  We were not sure about seeing the glow worms, after all, we had seen a few in the tunnels around Waihi, but in the end we decided to take the trip – and the glow worms put on an extra special performance.

Forgotten Highway

Whangamomona: for those of you with children – this is Radiator Springs from “Cars”. The “highway 43” was created when prospectors had high hopes for the area and farming was sustaining early settlers; lack of gold, minerals and other easy to get resources made the place less interesting, and with the collectivisation of farms in the 1960’s, the death nail was finally hammered in.

Oakura and the black sand beach

November 27, 2011 2 comments

Mount Taranaki Volcano – perfect place for a curry

November 26, 2011 Leave a comment

On the map, the volcano that is Taranaki looks immense, but no matter how far we were getting through the dairy laden landscape (why is cheese so expensive here?), the volcano would never come into sight – the low cloud shrouding the mountain.

Whanganui Coast and Kai Iwi Beach

November 25, 2011 Leave a comment

On the way up to Mount Taranaki we made a detour via Kai Iwi Beach and invented a new game – Poo Pumice. The idea is that it is like  Poo Sticks, but played with pumice from the beach. Drop the pumice into the river at the top of the beach, first pumice to the sea wins.

Picton and return crossing

November 24, 2011 Leave a comment

When we first arrived on the South Island, we liked Picton and said that we would make some time on the way back, so we arrived a bit early and camped up in Picton. The exploring runs out pretty quick, but one thing that did keep us amused was the hull of an old clipper with some pretty amazing statistics in terms of size, capacity, history, distance travelled etc. As we were admiring what was one of the oldest things in New Zealand we were joined by a couple of Americans who amused us greatly.
