Sydney – why is it not the capital?

January 3, 2012 2 comments

After missing the fireworks, we were determined to make the most of Sydney, and just in the first afternoon we despatched the botanical gardens (after finding the oldest bridge in Australia, a whole 4 feet long!), the Opera House and the ferry to Manly. Only mistake – it was a bank holiday Monday and Manly was mental, with the beaches, streets, cafes and ferry all rammed.

New Year in Nelson Bay: “Sydney, watch out”

December 31, 2011 Leave a comment

Originally we hoped to be in Sydney for the New Year – but given that accommodation costs the same as a small family car, an early decision was to bail out of the drama of Sydney and enjoy the more sedate fare of Nelson Bay.

Sand-boarding the giant dunes

December 30, 2011 4 comments

They cough, splutter, squeak, and occasionally manage a g’day; very funny.

Wooli (pronounced Wool – Eye)

December 25, 2011 4 comments

Initially we were disappointed by Wooli; the ridiculous amount we had paid, combined with the “generous” photo’s on the web ( the owners are estate agents, what did we expect!), meant that we thought we were in some luxurious lodges for Christmas. Spider and ant infested cabins were more like the reality.

Byron Bay

December 23, 2011 Leave a comment

Little more than a stop over in this famous hippie zone to appreciate the lighthouse and the surf, with the added touch of watching the dolphins playing off the head. With our picnic on the beach we were also treated to some pretty impressive surfing.
