Port Stephens – back to basics.

Our seven hour drive to Port Stephens was only interupted by a fairly hum drum stop in Port Macquarie. The stop was however enhanced by the greatest salad ever. How a simple salad can make a place, and being the best thing there tell you a lot about a place at the same time.

The route we took down was via the great lakes, and these were beautiful, but to be completely honest, after 6 hours driving, either our eyes were blurry, or we were not running that high on the interest stakes because we simply looked out of the window, confirmed they looked nice and drove on.  – terrible really.

The treat came once we arrived at our hostel… it consisted of 4 cabins with two rooms in each clustered around a jungle kitchen. The place was nicely remote and completely overgrown, wild animals everywhere, koala’s in the trees, possums living in our ceiling, big weaver spiders spinning webs across the pathways, Bull Ants and a big Alsatian called Bo to boot.

Day trips out in the car allowed us to explore the peninsula, check out the beaches, Nelson Bay and wider up into the Great Lakes. Key highlights (!) include the tallest tree in NSW and the lighthouse off Seal Roacks.
