Cairns

We have a brief pit stop in Cairns before our flight back down to Brisbane and end up on the national news.

Nothing too exciting, we happened to be visiting a local wildlife dome on top of Cairns Casino, a nice tropical aviary with crocs, koala’s, lizards etc, when suddenly a camera crew arrived from Channel 7 news. The dome was celebrating it’s 8th birthday. Over here, that is something akin to history, and we, together with another family in the dome are invited to join in the celebrations. A cake comes, out, followed by a koala, crocodile, and a frog-mouthed bird. A quick happy birthday, and we all eat the cake before playing with the animals – we timed that one just right!

birthday on the news

the esplanade - in the UK it would just be vandalised

As with most of this tropical coast, Cairns is ridiculously hot and humid, but it does have the esplanade;  a massive public pool with fountains, sand beaches and great views right on the edge of the sea. It is a real life saver and the two days we were in Cairns we spent some of the afternoon with the locals cooling off in the lagoon.

chilling out in the hostel

One evening, on the way back to the hostal, we saw a closing down sale of didgeridoos – all half price. By chance, earlier on, I had been chatting to a guy at a didgeridoo shop further down the road, and he was kind enough to teach me how to play, make some interesting sounds and recognise how to start up a didge. Well, when we saw the sale we could not resist having a go, and it was not long before we became the proud owners of a 5 foot didge and were arranging a courier to get it back to the UK. The didgeridoo express is making it’s way across the world as I write.

No no no no no – not a didgeridoo!!!!!!!!! I can’t believe it. I suppose it could make a nice ornament in the fish tank.
